In early January 2014, Gartner, a famous IT researcher and advisor, listed top 10 “strategic technology trends”, which is emerging technology that offers an opportunity for strategic business advantage for early adopters or with potential for significant market disruption in the next five years, for 2014. 3D Printing is one of the ten. Gartner expected shipments of 3D printers is to “grow 75% in 2014 and nearly double the following year as the technology emerges as a real, viable and cost-effective means for designs, streamlined prototyping and short-run manufacturing”.
 
IDC, another IT market intelligence provider, also reported that “3D printers will see worldwide unit shipments grow by 10 times over the forecast period (2012-2017), and worldwide hardware value will more than double in the short term”.
